What Is Recycling?

Recycling refers to the process of collecting waste products and packaging in order to rebuild useful and reusable materials that can be used to create new products. It saves companies money by not requiring as many raw materials and is less expensive if properly managed. Some products, such as the plastic film on most food packaging, are still not recycled. This year, legislative progress has been made to prohibit the use of so-called “microplastics” and “microbeads” in cosmetic products. This is due to the fact that they end up in the sea and harm marine wildlife. Regardless of government action or EU regulations, it is ultimately up to the public and corporations to make recycling work.

The term “recycling” refers to the act of reusing something. The more we recycle, the less energy is used, expenses are reduced, and the negative environmental effects of the processing and extraction of virgin materials are reduced.

How Does Recycling Save Energy?

Recycling is beneficial not only to the environment, but also to our communities and economies. Recycling helps to reduce landfill in the United Kingdom, which is especially vital now that nearly all of the country’s landfills are full (read our previous blog entry). It also helps to safeguard the environment by lowering emissions and the so-called “greenhouse effect,” which is linked to global warming. If everyone stopped recycling, pollution in the air, water, and land would skyrocket.

Collecting, transporting, and processing virgin resources to create product items from scratch can be costly and time-consuming. Processing reusable materials such as wood, paper, plastic, and metal necessitates a significant amount of energy. Water pollution, air pollution, and negative implications on local communities and ecosystems are all common side consequences of raw virgin material extraction.  For example, four tons of bauxite ore are required for every ton of aluminum, which must be mined, transported, processed, smelted (at high temperatures), combined with caustic soda, and then heated and purified from impurities. The aluminum can then be used to produce items.

In contrast, manufacturing items from recycled materials involves a much simpler, less energy-intensive procedure. Recycled materials are retrieved, delivered, separated from other recycled goods, processed, and then transformed into new products. By utilizing recycled goods instead of drawing fresh materials, producers can construct and produce the same goods with less costs and little energy that eventually leads to reduced burning of fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas and oil. Because recycled items have already been extracted and processed, producing the same products a second time is both cost-effective and energy-efficient. New objects made from recycled materials use up to 30% less energy than new ones made from virgin materials.

Is Recycling Energy-efficient?

Paper is made from trees, metals are made from specific minerals and ores, glass is made from sand, and plastic is made from oil. Recycling these objects saves energy, fuel, work, money, and time, all of which are used in the manufacture of new things. We conserve natural resources by using products multiple times. Recycling consumes only 5% of the energy required to manufacture new items from raw resources. Many materials, such as metal and glass, can be recycled multiple times without losing their quality. Raw minerals are becoming scarce and non-renewable.

As a result, they must be utilized carefully and collected from recycled products so that they can be reused. Recycling will also minimize the quantity of mining and deforestation, which will help to safeguard wildlife habitats. With some people still questioning, “What is recycling?” The importance and power of recycling should be instilled in children while they are still in school, so that they can spread the word and exert pressure on local governments.
